Learning to Read: Beyond Phonics and Whole Language (Language and Literacy (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Teachers College Pr (December, 1998)
Authors: G. Brian Thompson, Tom Nicholson, and Tom Nicholas
Average review score:

A good review of processes in reading
This book is a useful overview of the processes involved in learning to read. It cover comprehension, learning to read, and phonological awareness. This book discusses the different types of reading instruction which is usually shrouded in controversy but this discusses different processes that different teaching methods create, rather than a debate over which reading instruction is better.

Learning to Read: Beyond Phonics and Whole Language
This book breaks down the reading process into the foundational pieces necessary for success. It was a valuable tool in helping the parents, that I work with, understand why I do the things that I do, in my classroom.

Letters from Jian Hui and Other Poems
Published in Paperback by The Wildflower Press (08 October, 2001)
Author: Phyllis Hoge Thompson
Average review score:

Eloquent and Moving
I read Phyllis Hoge Thompson's "Letters from Jian Hui" the day it arrived, read it with admiration, read it with emotions deeply stirred. "Letters" produced in me an intense emotional response, container and content so handsomely fused--eloquent text, lovely binding, delicate type face, evocative illustrations. Kristina Kachele and Mina Yamashita are to be congratulated for their contributions.

Letters from Jian Hui
The voice of the Letters from Jian Hui captures the sometimes humorous, often poignant linguistic surprises a foreign speaker brings to another language--in these poems a native Mandarin speaker is struggling to express herself in English. "Usually there is not much to do and I am boring." I like the way this happens through the series of poems without ever being overdone. I especially like the sense of earnestness I hear in Jian Hui, that earnestness and desire to do the very best that she possibly can rings very true to experience with overseas Chinese friends. Nothing is taken for granted and friendships are deeply treasured.

Lighthouses of Atlantic Canada--A Pictorial Guide
Published in Paperback by CatNap Publications (01 March, 2000)
Author: Courtney Thompson
Average review score:

Field Guide for lighthouses
Like her Maine guide, this is a comprehensive field guide for lighthouse seekers and lighthouse lovers. She tells you history, lots of photos, maps, directions how to get there and how to photograph them.

The book's main flaw is that is graphic design is rather weak. It's not a beautiful coffee-table book, as it could be. The photos are packed in, and reproduced around 2x3 size.

Pictorial is Right!
I have quite a few books on Lighthouses. This is absolutely the best I have seen for really giving you a feel of the lighthouses. Each lighthouse is show from different viewpoints. There are closeup views and views showing the area around the lighthouse. Maps are included showing a general area and smaller maps show the location with major highways marked. Driving directions are also included. This is truly a book worth visiting again and again.

Liturgies of the Western Church
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (November, 1980)
Author: Bard Thompson
Average review score:

Excellent survey of liturgical worship
This book is a collection of sample liturgies from across the history of the Western church. Every section starts with an introduction to the historical context (as well as context within the tradition) of the particular liturgy, and also comparison to other works by the same author, and also some discussion of scholars on the liturgy. For instance, on the Mass, there is some historical discussion of how the Mass came about, how it is to be celebrated, some of the 'evolution' of the mass, what it means. If one is confused about what is going in worship, this can be a helpful guide. It gives sample principal liturgies and fairly good analysis on "what is going on" and "why/how this developed". The author, Bard Thompson, was the Dean of the Graduate School at Drew University until his death in 1987.

I used this book for a Master's level History of Christian Worship course at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. I found it interesting to follow in terms of various traditions of worship, and fascinating to follow.

The various liturgies include: the First Apology of Justin Martyr, the apostolic tradition of Hippolytus, the Low Mass (of Roman Catholicism), Martin Luther's "Formula Missae and Deutschemesse", Zwingli's Zurich Liturgy, Bucer's Strassburg Liturgy, Calvin's Form of Church Prayers, First and Second Prayer Books of King Edward VI (i.e., some of the Book of Common Prayer), John Knox's "Forme of PRayers", the Middleburg Liturgy of the English Puritans, the Westminster Directory, Richard Baxter's "Savoy Liturgy", and John Wesley's "Sunday Service."

Thompson gives good translations (E.g., the Mass is both presented side-by-side in latin and English) and draws upon copies of many original documents to insure accuracy. There's lots of bibliographical information (e.g., "for further reading") in addition, for those who want to do further research.

Liturgical Sourcebook
This book is mainly a collection of texts with short introductions. And what you get is a sampler of Eucharist service from several of the major Christian denominations. You get a copy of the Tridentine Mass, Luther's DeutschMesse (in english translation of course) and the Eucharist from the first Book of Common Prayer. Also several other Protestant Eucharistic liturgies. The emphasis is less on telling you about comparative liturgy and more on letting you compare.

Macromedia Director Lingo Workshop: The Complete Resource to the Lingo Scripting Language/Book and Cd-Rom
Published in Paperback by Hayden Books (June, 1995)
Authors: John Thompson and Sam Gottlieb
Average review score:

Without a doubt, the BEST BOOK for learning lingo
This book is the best book, well really the only book I have every seen for learning lingo. It also acts as a great reference tool. The appendix are unbelievably valuable.

A excellent Director Lingo book
This book is a must for those who want to know what is Lingo in Director. It covered most of the functions and has all of the examples recorded on the CD. There are some real world example on the CD too, that allowed me to sneak into the CD and find out the tricks they used. This book was written in step-by-step and straight to the point fashion, and as a computer idiot like me, I was able to learn Lingo within few days. Its a must for those who want to learn and for those who want to polish their Lingo skill.

Making the Team: A Guide for Managers
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (13 October, 1999)
Author: Leigh L. Thompson
Average review score:

Worth the Price for "External Evironments"
Leigh Thompson has done it again. Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts. I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading. I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team. I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.

Making the Team Makes the Grade!
Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book. Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, of getting things done through teamwork. Clearly written, with many case examples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences to create a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly liked her explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are not a panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teams contribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfied with the way things are going in your organization, this book would make a great (anonymous?) gift for your boss!

A wonderful traveler's guide!
This book is an excellent resource to take on the road with you to Massachusetts.! Great pictures with easy to follow directions. I personally used it on a trip last summer and saw most of the lights in the book! Highly recommended.

This book has it all!
This book contains lots of color pictures as well as histories and travel directions. I found it extremely useful as a guidebook and it has made a nice souvenier of a recent trip to some of the lights featured.

Max's Train Ride: A Squeaky Storybook About a Very Special Day! (Fisher-Price Squeaky Shape Playbooks)
Published in Hardcover by Readers Digest (September, 1997)
Authors: Susan Hood, Thompson, Fisher-Price (Firm), and Thompson Brothers
Average review score:

Our 2 Year Old's Favorite Book!
I knew our 2 year old daughter liked trains when I bought this book, but I had no idea it would be such a hit! She carries it with her everywhere and we ready it over and over. The lovely, bright illustrations have lots of detail, so there are many things we can talk about. (If mommy and daddy get tired ready the story over and over!)

We had to order a new copy, since the first one was literally loved to pieces!

My son loves this book!
I started reading this book to my son when he was only a few months old. Now, at a year, it is still one of his favorites. The bright illustrations and rhyming narrative hold his attention. Plus the squeaky cover with the 3D people and animals makes this book a good toy/story to take on trips.

Mosby's Clinical Nursing
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (15 January, 2002)
Authors: June M. Thompson, Gertrude K. McFarland, Jane E. Hirsch, and Susan M. Tucker
Average review score:

Mosby's Clinical Nursing
As a first year nursing student, writing nursing care plans is new to me. This book not only is an excellent aid to writing care plans, but also understanding the pathophysiology, lab values expected and s/s to carefully observe. It is a very "user friendly" publication with a wealth of information. I recommend this publication to anyone in the health care field, especially students.

I'd recommend this book to anyone
This is an excellent book. I am a nursing student and I was looking for a book which would help me to develop an individualized care plan for my patients and this is it! and by the way, the pathophysiology is great!
